Garden of Monet モネの庭

I've just visited a garden called "Monet’s Garden Marmottan" in Kochi prefecture in Shikoku Island, Japan. "What!? Monet's garden in Japan?". Yeah, that was exactly what I thought. So one way to find out is simple. VISIT THERE.
四国は高知県にある「モネの庭」というところに行ってきた。「は？日本にモネの庭？」。そう、私も全く同じことを思った。なので行ってみることにした。

First thing I must emphasize is this garden was created under the approval and cooperation of Gilbert Vahe, head of the Monet’s Garden in Giverny France.
一つ強調しておくべきことは、この庭は、「クロード・モネ財団の指導を仰ぎながら、彼の精神と共に再現したも（ウェブサイトより抜粋）」であること。

Now, the question "Why in Kochi, though?" remains. But for the answer, I had an idea "It must be...". In order to understand it, we must remind ourselves "Who was Claude Monet.
そして、残る疑問は「でもどうして高知なの？」。しかし、私は少しこの答に「きっとこういうことに違いない」という”あたり”をつけていた。この疑問の答えを知るには、「モネとはどんな人だったのか」を今一度復習する必要がある。

As far as what I, who learned Fine Art once, understood about Monet is...
He was a painter who drew "light". Therefore people know him as "impressionist".
He was one of painters who were alive in the time of new movements were born and grown in the world of art. It was the era Chromosome of modern art was starting to form.
一応、純粋美術を学んだ人間として、私が理解しているモネは...
彼は「光」を描いた画家で、「印象派」として知られる。彼は、芸術の世界で様々な動きが生まれていた時代に生きた画家の1人。その時代は「モダン・アート」の染色体が誕生し形がつくられはじめた時代だった。

Monet was a painter who tried to draw, what in between him and the object he was drawing. Something in between him and the objects are "air", "humidity" and "light". It changes depending on the season and where you are.
モネは、モネと描こうとした風景の間にあるものを描こうとした画家だった。風景と彼の間にあるものには「空気」「湿度」「光」がある。それは、季節や場所によって変わる。

You can see strong light and high humidity in Monet's famous pieces. As a Shikoku Islander, I could guess Kochi could be the one of the best spot to recreate, the light and humidity. 
モネの有名な作品には、強い光と湿度が感じられる。四国で生まれ育った私は、高知なら、モネが描いたような光と湿度が再現できるだろうと思っていた。

I visit there in October so roses were off season here in Shikoku. However, the garden was pretty interesting. This place offers you one of a few chances that to see and learn what the famous European painter might have seen and felt in Japan.
10月に訪れたのでバラがオフシーズンだった。しかし、この庭はとても興味深い。
「有名なヨーロッパの画家が何を見て、何を感じたのだろうか」に思いをはせられる日本では数少ない貴重な場所だろう。

If you have a chance to visit here, I would recommend strongly to take some photographs with the though of "If I were Monet, standing in this garden, today, where he would decide to draw and how". That is one of the unique ways to learn fine art.
もし、この庭を訪れる機会があれば、「もし自分がモネなら、今日、この庭に立ち、どこをどのように描こうとしただろう」と考えながら写真を撮ることを強くお勧めする。美術を理解するユニークな方法の１つになるだろう。

本家本元のフランスにあるモネの庭では見られないものが１つだけある。

Blue water lilies.

I have always thought Shikoku Island is very colorful Island. There are so many reasons why I feel so but one of the reasons is "Strength of natural light".
四国はとてもカラフルな島だと私は思っている。その理由はたくさんあるが、その１つが「自然光の強さ」だ。

Because this island is in between 2 different seas, and the highest mountain in west Japan divides this island in 2 areas, that make this island possible to have different climate depending on where you are in this island.
四国は２つの海に挟まれ、西日本最高峰を携える山脈で２つのエリアに分けられることから、四国のどこにいるかで、気候が随分変わる。

If climate are different, the light changes. How we see the natural light is effected by where on the earth you are on, wind, latitude, humidity.
もし、気候が違えば、自然光も変わる。どのように私たちが自然光を感じるかは、地球のどこにいるか、風、標高、湿度に影響される。

Because of these reasons, Shikoku surprises you that so many different impression this island can show you. And that is one of reason I always say Shikoku is a colorful island.
これらの理由から、四国は場所によって違う表情を見せる。そんな理由から、私は四国をカラフルな島だという。
